One of my pet hates in other people’s writing is when they string sentences together using commas. While commas are clearly useful, the problem occurs when a comma is used to separate two different thoughts which should have really been separated by some further punctuation. This is technically known as “comma splicing”, a frequent occurrence in student essays. Take this as an example: “European farmers have received large subsidies for several years, the first subsidy was paid in 1991, this had a major impact on countries like France.” The text above does not read well because it includes more than one sentence, and should have been split up as such. A better alternative might be: “European farmers have received large subsidies for several years. The first subsidy was paid in 1991 and had a major impact on countries like France.” In the above example, a simple full stop resolved the problem.
